This month’s DOXLON had another great lineup for those interested in Container Orchestration and Microservices, including a headline talk all the way from the US via Video link from the legendary Kelsey Hightower, talking about Istio, a powerful service mesh framework for Kubernetes and Microservices. In addition we had great talks from James Rasell talking about the container solution they built at Elsevier using Nomad, and Graem Forbes at Infitity Works who walked us through productionising a new application on Docker on a very tight deadline. As usual, another great meetup, followed by the usual beers and pizza and pub down the road! Our next meetup will be on July 27th, see you there!

ISTIO AND KUBERNETES
Kelsey Hightower

Kubernetes changed how we deploy applications. Istio is going to change how we connect, manage, and secure them. Istio is an open platform that provides a uniform way to connect, manage, and secure microservices. Istio supports managing traffic flows between microservices, enforcing access policies, and aggregating telemetry data, all without requiring changes to the microservice code

CONTAINING ELSEVIER’S WORLD USING HASHICORP NOMAD
James Rasell, Principal Systems Engineer at Elsevier

For the past four months, Elsevier’s Core Engineering team have embarked on a project to design and develop a container solution. Adopting a container platform, an inherently complex task, is made all the more difficult by the requirement that each development team be able to deploy, run, and maintain their own clusters with little to no core infrastructure support. James Rasell, a principal engineer within the core engineering team, will demonstrate the framework and its capabilities from deployment to autoscaling.

WEBSCALE IN 15 DAYS
Graeme Forbes, Senior Consultant at Infinity Works

A story of a new employee’s trial by fire, productionising a never-seen-before application with very tight deadlines. How to approach the seemingly impossible and succeed, even if the scope changes…
