October brought to DOXLON that hot industry topic: containers. With three lightning talks plus an expert panel discussion, we shed light on differences between most important container orchestration technologies.
KUBERNETES IN PRODUCTION - CHRIS JACKSON (PEARSON)
Our first speaker, Chris Jackson, talked about Kubernetes in production at Pearson Education.
Chris’s team deployed Kubernetes in an environment that was still not quite mature for the implementation. They not only paved the road to an infrastructure that is ultra-developer-friendly, but reduced cloud running cost by 25-50%, increased the number of users and releases, and drove massive internal culture change. This hasn’t been without hickups, but ultimately, Chris told us, Kube’s upfront complexity pays off in capability.

MESOS - ALAN BOVER (SCHIBSTED)
Alan Bover, engineer at Schibsted, an international media group with over 200 million monthly users, talks pros and cons of Mesos, including why you must develop the right framework in order to make good use of it. Check out several detailed Mesos deployment scenarios, and why Alan thinks comparing Kubernetes and Mesos is akin to comparing apples to oranges.

It was a straight battle of container orchestration technologies and one not to be missed if you’re either using or looking into using any of these technologies. Representatives from leading container consultancies: David O’Dwyer, Founder at LiveWyer, Contino’s Marcus Maxwell, and Martin Lassen, Senior Engineer at Container Solutions, debate core features and advantages and answer audience questions.
